The demon’s mouth opened wide, displaying rows of jagged, sharp teeth. A frightening sound erupted from him. It took a moment for Vahn to realize that he was laughing. So he found Terra’s response amusing?

“Human, you are dying already, wilting away. Demons, humans, they are all the same. They struggle, endure the agony of their life, and in turn, wreak havoc upon the world. But I am here to help. I am here to free you of that pain, to save the world and give you a greater purpose.”

Gi blinked. What greater purpose was he talking about? Although her limbs felt weighted down in her distress, she battled with herself to keep a level head. Now wasn’t the time to let fear get the best of her. She took a deep breath and stood straight.

“W-what…..what greater purpose are you talking about?” Gi managed to force out, her voice still shaky.

“Why, giving me power of course, to perform my deed of saving you, saving the world.”

Deniv snorted at this, rolling his good eye. “And this is the danger living for a very long time presents.” Deniv spoke, mostly to the humans on his back. “While some retain their sanity, there are others who do not, or cannot.” He tensed his legs again, and began stepping away from the confrontation, still staring at Malum.

“Hold on.” He said, bounding forward, keeping Malum in view for now. When they were a safer distance away he stopped and looked back. How many demons had gone that way? Although the most recent one at least had the decency to stay in the desert. He let out a weary sigh before bounding up the mountain, seemingly to wilt a bit.

“I will have to check on the demons on the mountain, to make sure there are no more causalities. Girls, I do not know whether your people will believe you or not, but they have to be warned about Malum. I’m sure, since it is a demon running amock, they will act quickly.” He turned his torso slightly, so he could see them. “Focus on the risk to their people and not the fact that Malum seems to be striking at only demons and bokoblins at this point. But once he is finished gorging himself on my people, I imagine yours will be next. Since he seems to be under the assumption that he is ‘freeing’ people of their ‘suffering’.” He spat out the last sentence, turning forward and finally reaching the summit and his manor.

He knelt down, lowering himself to the ground so the three could dismount.

Vahn eyed the new threat, warily. Malum. He was a juggernaut of a demon. His very appearance was enough to strike terror through the heart of any normal human. That skeletal smile, the dark scales of obsidian that lined his massive body. His eyes were on fire. But Vahn wasn’t exactly a normal human. He kept his face neutral.

Gi, on the other hand, was at a loss for words. She clung to Vahn’s shoulder, all the while keeping her arm laced with Terra’s. If the three of them were close enough, nothing could hurt them, right? We just have to stay together. She clenched her eyes shut, wishing it was all just a bad dream and that she would wake up in her bed at any moment.

“I’m the fool?” Malum replied, his tone still bearing an air of calm. “My, but you’re so blind…you don’t even see how much you suffer. You and your little companions. But I can. I see it in your eyes. Your very essence. The pitiful creatures that I have murdered, as you say, have been saved. I have bestowed them with a greater purpose.”

He locked gazes with the centaur. “Lower your weapon. It will do you no good.”

“Blind? Only partially.” Deniv shot back, irritation growing. “I do not know who you are, or why you seem to believe it is your right to ‘end suffering’ by taking life, but it is not something I can allow. You’ve killed my bokoblins, the demons under my care and now you come onto my mountain.” He spoke loftily, lowering his weapon. The demon might have been right, until Deniv knew how it killed it was better just to retreat.

He continued to stare back at Malum, legs becoming tense. He was ready to run, and of all things Deniv was confident in, his speed was the greatest. “Do you have anything else to say?”

“Leaving so soon?”

The hauntingly tranquil voice called to the group from above. There, Malum stood from one of the higher peaks, observing them for the past few minutes. They were a curious lot.

“A demon and three humans…why it sounds like the opening of a joke, does it not?” The demon lifted a gnarled lip in a tainted grin. He found it interesting that the demon seemed to care for their safety as opposed to killing them on sight. So unlike the creatures that he had come to know throughout his lifetime. Very curious indeed.

“Allow me to introduce myself,” he stood up from where he crouched, “I am Malum, and I am your redemption. The answer to all of your pain and suffering.”

Deniv stared, taking the new demons’ appearance in before leaning down and roughly taking the arms of the three humans and putting them on his back.

“Malum, is it? I can only assume you are the one killing at this time?” He pointed up the bow towards Malum, not shooting, but waiting. “My name is Deniv, current Prince of the Demons. I would say ‘cease your murdering’ but since you consider yourself our ‘redemption’, I doubt common sense would touch you.” He smirked slightly, still looking up at Malum.

“Perhaps I should say ‘cease your foolishness’ at once.” He said dryly. “Before you do something you’ll no doubt regret in the future.”

Deniv had long since tossed off the guise of a human in favor for the speed of his demon form. It also allowed him to get down the mountain quickly, which was the point. Vahn was not in the manor, and it took all Deniv had not to imagine the worst. Even moreso when he began…

Gi bowed her head down in reverence. Surely the bokoblin deserved that much, right? It was in her silence that she heard it. The stomping of feet, no, hooves. It grew louder and louder. Whatever it was that killed the bokoblin had apparently targeted them next.

She felt Terra’s grip on her shoulder intensify and that was when she turned to find, to her deathly surprise, a creature that appeared to be half horse and half man. She screamed in terror before she could stop herself, jumping to her feet. That alarmed Vahn into following suit.

However, his face quickly lost all semblance of fear.

“We heard noises and came down here to investigate,” he explained, calmly. “We didn’t know the extent of the damage…or the danger. My apologies.”

Gi’s racing heart slowed a bit upon seeing Vahn’s lack of fear. Come to think of it, the monster did look familiar. Of course. Deniv was a demon, after all. This had to be him.

“I’ll go back to the manor,” Vahn resigned, before turning to Terra and Gi. “Maybe you two should go back to Skyloft for now?”

Denivs’ face softened slightly, although he still was tensed. He lowered his torso a bit so that he could move closer to the young humans. “I understand. It’d be wise to head for cover, as you can see..whoever is doing has begun killing en masse. I do not know how many humans may have fallen, or demons really. All I know is that the young Netty has departed the mortal realm.” His words sounded taught and the calm was forced.

“I do not want anything to happen to any of you, so if it is possible take your birds.” He turned to Gi and Terra at this. “I must find out the source of this and stop it before any more life is lost.” He shifted his bow, looking away from the humans.

“Please leave quickly.”

Gi nodded, stepping forward to her brother’s side. Of course she had to go, what if someone needed healing? Maybe, if the Bokoblin were hurt, they would need her too. She quickly regarded the pouch at her left hip to find that it was filled to the brim.

I’m glad that I decided to brew a new batch of healing potions last night. She gave Vahn and Terra a reassuring smile.

“Stay close,” Vahn advised before resuming the trek down the mountainside. “I don’t know what to expect.”

The trip was startlingly quiet. The usually hazardous and turbulent volcano almost seemed serene, completely motionless. That was a description that Vahn never thought he would use for the place.

Upon their hasty exit of the infernal lava caves, they were met with a disturbing sight.

At least a dozen of the bokoblin lay still on the ashen lain terrain. Amidst the gravel were bits and pieces of their weapons and clothing.

Gi remained silent in shock as she watched her brother approach the first body.

There was a struggle, but no blood. Vahn noted, looking over the body. He kneeled over to check for a pulse, only to be met with more stillness. He found it peculiar that there were no wounds evident upon the beast. It was as though it had just dropped dead of its own accord. The evidence of their tumultuous struggle told him otherwise, however.

“Are they…?” Gi weakly called over.

“Dead.” Vahn answered before she had a chance to finish.

The heat did not do any justice to the already rotting corpses.

He could already spot another group of corpses, and pushed himself to a gallop to catch up. It occurred to him at the very last second that there were three humans standing there, and upon stopping he glanced down. The relief of seeing Vahn(and his sister and friend) was extinguished by anger at seeing them so close to danger.

“Vahn…what are you doing here? It’s far too dangerous for humans to be here. There is something…close.” He held the bow and arrow out, pointing towards the corpses. “You have to leave.”
